Preserve It Better: Borate Before Bandaids– a very hands-on presentation and workshop
with Jan Scopel, ChE, Preservation Facility Manager, Chase-Lloyd House, Historic Annapolis.
Discover the What, Why and How to use this practically forgotten family of Boron mineral compounds (borates) to preserve and protect new and not-so-new wood features of homes and historic artifacts from existing and future rot and insect damage. Jan will briefly cover some basic chemistry and the history of the uses of Borates and Glycol Borates, dive into the practical and resource saving application to new and invaluable historic wood features, provide some examples of borated wood, and demonstrate how to cook-up a batch. You will learn how to work this method into your own personal preservation or repair plan. Borate before you paint or repair!
